Migration has a significant impact on population development in Austria. The influx of refugees will lead to a noticeable increase in employment in the coming years, but will also significantly increase unemployment, especially among the refugees themselves. The integration of refugees into the labor market requires additional instruments that are tailored to the current challenges. In the long term, given the predicted fertility rate, future social benefits cannot be maintained without qualified migrants, who are generally well integrated, or can only be financed with a significant increase in taxes.
The article "Migration: Present and Future" by Johannes Berger and Ludwig Strohner, research associates at EcoAustria, is published in the current issue 3/2016 of Wirtschaftspolitische Blätter, which is dedicated to the topic of migration and integration.
