Philipp Koch, Ph.D. is Head of the Data Science Section at EcoAustria. His research focuses on empirical issues related to economic development, structural change, innovation, and trade.

Koch completed his doctoral degree in 2024 at the University of Toulouse and the Center for Collective Learning. His dissertation applied machine learning techniques to historical data to gain new insights into economic history. Koch has published in leading economics and interdisciplinary journals, including Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), Nature Communications, Communications Earth & Environment, Regional Studies, and Economics Letters. Prior to his Ph.D., he earned a Master’s degree in Economics with honors from the Vienna University of Economics and Business (WU) in 2020 and was working at EcoAustria as Research Assistant and Junior Researcher. Koch is also an external lecturer in Macroeconomics at WU.
